After years of suffering through poor health, Philip Dowling visited a naturopath. While not expecting the world, over several months, he experienced such positive improvements in his health and wellbeing that Philip decided to attend naturopathic college in 1991. Since then, Philip has opened his own practice, run health retreats, managed Naturopathic facilities at Wellpark College, developed naturopathy diplomas and degrees and written a book called, ‘Journey Back To Health’, which explores how health can be regained through planning, education and willpower.

Having practiced naturopathy for 23 years, Philip now enjoys better health in his 60’s than he did in his 20’s!

Today, Philip talked to Confitex about how nutrition can assist with health. Because many issues stem from an unhealthy gut, including those relating to prostate, it’s extremely important to be considerate of the things you’re putting into your body. Whether you want to prevent disease or rebuild after suffering a health condition, here are several recommendations from Philip that will help start you on your positive health journey today:

Because many issues stem from an unhealthy gut (potentially including those relating to prostate) it’s extremely important to be considerate of the things you’re putting into your body and every step you take to enhance gut function will be helpful.

Whether you want to prevent disease or rebuild after suffering a health condition, here are several recommendations that will help start you on your positive health journey today:

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a very effective antioxidant which helps to protect body cells. It also supports the growth and repair of body tissues, plus works to help the immune system function normally. Vitamin C is often low in diets, so make sure you’re consuming plenty of foods like broccoli, leafy greens, oranges, berries and green peas.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E protects the membrane of cells and prevents dangerous free radicals from taking hold. You can add vitamin E to your diet by ingesting unheated oils, nuts and seeds and avocado – we’ll talk about this more below!

Zinc

Zinc is often low in men who have prostate problems. Zinc is required for healthy prostate function, so it’s important to get enough of it. In New Zealand especially, we have low levels of zinc in our soil so we need to be eating foods like oysters, pumpkin seeds and sesame seeds to boost zinc levels.

Avocado

Philip describes avocado as a super food! It’s full of vitamin B, vitamin E, vitamin C, and beta sitosterol (which may be of benefit to those with an enlarged prostate). We’re coming into summer – so there’s less excuse for not having some avocado in your diet!

Reduce intake of sugar

Excess sugar has a lot to answer for when it comes to long term metabolic disorders, such as diabetes and the metabolic syndrome. High blood sugar can damage blood vessels and nerves over time, so think about reducing the amount of sugar in your diet (or cutting it out altogether!).

BONUS – bladder health tips

Foods that positively support the immune system and support healthy tissue will help keep the bladder functioning well. All foods that contain vitamin C will be helpful. Cranberries have also been used as a food and in supplements for preventing bladder infections.

Philip also recommends pelvic floor exercises as a way to stay on top of bladder control.

All it takes are a few minor steps to turn your health and lifestyle around whether you have experienced major illness like prostate cancer or not – but once you shift your focus, create some accountability and experience incredible results – life can improve incrementally!
